Salmon Glacier – NW Britsh Columbia, SE Alaska

Salmon Glacier is a true marvel of nature, captivating the hearts of adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. As one of the very few large “rivers of ice” type glaciers that you can actually drive to, it offers a unique and accessible experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Located near Stewart, BC, and Hyder, Alaska, the journey to Salmon Glacier is an adventure in itself. Along the unpaved Granduc Road, you’ll gradually ascend to a summit viewpoint where you can witness the grandeur of the glacier as it gracefully descends from an expansive icefield.

But the adventure doesn’t end at the summit. Beyond this vantage point, you’ll discover more pull-offs that offer breathtaking views of the glacier, allowing you to truly appreciate its sheer size and icy magnificence. Additionally, there are a couple of side roads branching off from the main route, leading to secluded and serene camp spots where you can immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.

It’s worth noting that depending on the specific camp spot you choose, a sturdy 4×4 vehicle might be necessary to navigate the terrain. While 4×4 capability is not essential on the Granduc Road itself, it’s always a good idea to be cautious of construction and mining traffic, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey for everyone.

Salmon Glacier beckons you to witness its beauty and experience the awe-inspiring power of nature firsthand. So, embark on this extraordinary journey, embrace the serenity of the surroundings, and create unforgettable memories that will surely be cherished for a lifetime.
